The Confidence Challenge! All dancers should try this!

Irish Dancing Physical Fitness

Sometimes your performance doesn’t always go to plan.

It is very easy to be confident when things are working out well for you. But the real test of confidence lies in how you respond when things don’t go so well. A successful dancer has the ability to maintain confidence, instead of giving up when something goes wrong. This is because they know that over time their performance will come around. All dancers go through phases. You will have good days and bad days. They key to maintaining confidence is to know how to get out of a bad spell quickly. This is what I am going to help you with today. I am going to teach you how to build confidence.

How can we do this?

I want you to think about an area that you may need to improve on with relation to your dancing performance.

For example: What are your current dancing errors? It could be your turn outs, your rocks, your lifts… you might have more than one…

Done? Ok good… so think about those errors when reading these next few sentences…

Right now, you are not 100% confident in your abilities…

Because you have doubts in some areas in relation to your dancing performance…

Now don’t get me wrong we all have areas that need improvement, we are not the best at everything… BUT… we do want to improve to a point that allows us to perform whilst being 100% confident in our abilities…

How do we do this?

Repetition, repetition, repetition

I want you to practice and focus on these areas over and over again until you feel confident that you can perform these areas to the best of your ability…

If I asked you the same question in a few weeks time… what do you need to improve on? You should be giving me a different answer!

Because you should have resolved that last problem and you should be extra confident now…

This does not mean that you focus on all of the areas we are not so good at, we don’t want to do that, we also have to tap ourselves on the back for all of the things we are good at.

But if the negative thoughts are getting in the way of your self-confidence and performance then that’s when you have to take control… that’s when you have to focus on improving these areas…

Do you understand how this works now? I hope so…
