The preparation stages have begun for the Irish Dancing World Championships in April 2017. As a full-time Irish dancing coach, I thought I would help you to plan your conditioning program today.

What does conditioning mean?

Conditioning is when you apply stress to the body, in order to achieve a desired result. This stress can be both physical and mental. As a coach, it is my job to make sure that you are both physically and mentally prepared for major competitions. And it is your job to use stress to your advantage.

Lack of sleep, lack of proper food intake, nutrients and fluids are all considered as bad stress. Your dance practice regime, your strength training, your rehabilitation programming are all considered to be stress but beneficial to you. Good or bad, this is stress which you can easily take control of. As a coach, I always account for all sources of stress on the client and as a dancer and my client, you are asked to take control of this stress by following the plan that I give to you.

Are you a dancer who struggles to complete a dance routine without running out of breath?

Many Irish dancers whom I work with today struggled to complete a dance routine without running out of breath. So, following a series of tests and assessments, I designed a program tailored specifically to age, gender and other factors. The results were terrific. They were only terrific because the program was designed specifically for Irish dancers. Too many trainers hand out very well put together programs but they don’t give the specific results desired!
